Jasper Mountain

A vision came to life at Oregon’s Jasper Mountain School, a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed kids and families, and Rosboro is proud to have been part of the effort. In February 2011, the school broke ground on a new building that was designed to resemble an early-century train depot, a structure that enhances the whimsical and playful nature of the property, which already has a castle-like building on site that was specially requested by the kids who live there.

The new depot building has a wraparound second-level deck, exposed trusses, and a rooftop cupola that brings natural light into the main room. Holding 8 to 10 therapist offices, 2 playrooms, and a large conference space, the building is a stunning replacement to the double-wide trailer where the therapists were formerly stationed. Rosboro provided Premium Hand Select X-Beam Glulams to the project, which lends visual authenticity to all the exposed wood of this period-inspired architecture. The total cost of construction and materials is estimated at about $1 million, but generous donations of material and labor have reduced project costs by approximately $300,000.

After working with the 3 1/2″ wide Rosboro X-Beam, which eliminated the need for shimming beams on the job site to match standard framing widths, Jasper Mountain School contractor Randy Laule of RTL Construction is a believer. “We need to get the word out to architects to quit drawing a 3 1/8”, Laule said. “This is the best thing Rosboro has ever done – I never understood why it was 3 1/8”.
